[Product Post] Theme Tip: Banner Settings

2 minute read

October 17, 2014

One of the first steps in setting up your community will be the banner settings, which can be found under the "Appearance" menu in your Vanilla Forums Dashboard. These settings allow you to add SEO elements, such as a homepage title and description, that will appear in search engine results.

Please note, this information only applies to the homepage. Individual posts will have the data taken from the discussion titles in your community, and the description will be taken from the content. This is just one of the ways Vanilla does the SEO for you.

As for the rest of the banner settings, the section on the right is where you can add a logo, and start to give your community some personality. Here are the elements you can modify:

  • Banner Logo: This will replace the Banner Title. You have the freedom to use whatever size you want, but 250px x 50px is a great size that works nice.
  • Mobile Banner Logo: This allows you to add a small banner for the mobile theme.
  • Favicon: This is the icon usually seen in the URL bar and when someone bookmarks a link from your site.
  • Share Image: This is the image that will be included when content is shared on social networks (like Reddit or Google+) if no image is present in the content.

If you are using the Bootstrap theme you will need to tweak your theme, as the banner image will hide your "searchbar". This video shows you how to do your banner settings and how to make the CSS tweaks:

The following is the HTML and the CSS used in the video.

The Bootstrap theme is one of the most popular, so we wanted to offer this quick fix. If you are using a different theme, you may need to add some small HTML or CSS tweaks too, but the concepts are similar.

We hope you found these tips helpful. Check under the product category for more product tips.
