How to add Facebook, Twitter, Google, and OpenID to your Community

Let’s begin!

Enabling the plugins

  1. On the left Menu Panel under Users click on Authentication.
  2. Once inside Authentication, choose the plugin to enable from the drop down menu.
  3. For Google and OpenID click the “Enable” button
  4. For Facebook and Twitter, configure and click the “Save” button.

Facebook Connect

The Vanilla Facebook plugin enables your users to sign into the forum using their Facebook account. In order for Vanilla to connect with Facebook, you must set up a Facebook Application and share it’s information with Vanilla.

How to set up Facebook Connect

In order to set up Facebook Connect, you must create an “application” in Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/developers/apps.php.

Setting up your Facebook Application

  1. Click on the “Create New Application” button.
  2. Give your application a name. Under Terms, choose “I Agree” and click the “Create Application” button.
  3. You have successfully created a Facbeook Application!
  4. On the Application page go to “Web Site” on the left menu panel.
  5. Enter the site Url that appears on the Facebook Connect page from your Vanilla Forum Dashboard, most commonly this should be http://yourforumname.vanillaforums.com.

Once your application has been set up, you must copy the “Application ID” and “Application Secret” into the form on the Facebook page of your Vanilla Forum Dashboard and click the “save” button.

You’re done! Now your users can login via Facebook.

Twitter Connect

The Vanilla Twitter plugin enables your users to sign into the forum using their Twitter account. In order for Vanilla to connect with Twitter, you must register your Vanilla installation at Twitter.

How to set up Twitter Connect

In order to set up Twitter Connect, you must register Vanilla with Twitter at: http://dev.twitter.com/apps/new.

Setting up your Twitter Application

  1. Fill in the appropriate fields to register your application with Twitter.
  2. IMPORTANT: For the “Application Website” filed enter your Vanilla Forum Url, most commonly this should be http://yourforumname.vanillaforums.com.
  3. You have successfully created a Twitter Application!

Retrieve your applications “Consumer Key” and “Consumer Secret” under “Edit Details”.

Once you have registered your Application with Twitter, you must copy the “Consumer Key” and “Consumer Secret” into the form on the Twitter page of your Vanilla Forum Dashboard and click the “save” button.

You’re done! Now your users can sign in via Twitter.

Google Connect & OpenID

The Google Connect & OpenID plugins allow your users to sign into the forum using their Google or OpenID credentials.

There are no configuration options for OpenID. Just enable it, and your users will see the OpenID option when signing in.

To Enable Google and OpenID

  1. On the left Menu Panel under Users click on Authentication.
  2. Once inside Authentication, choose the plugin to enable from the drop down menu.
  3. Click the “Enable” button.
