Back in May 2017, we let you know about our new API. Last week we released a preview our new API to all customers.

The new API will make developing against Vanilla easier, with improvements such as:

  • Additional endpoints and methods
  • A live API explorer
  • Better security and per-user access tokens
  • CORS support
  • Better documentation and testing

The preview release exposes many of the core Vanilla resources. More endpoints will be released over the coming weeks and we expect that by end of year, API V2 will surpass the functionality of the current API V1.

To try out API v2, you’ll need to contact your CSM or customer service and have them enable a plugin that will expose the API documentation right in your dashboard.

The API follows the OpenAPI Initiative and is documented in your account dashboard. A note of caution, the documentation supports live testing of endpoints. We suggest testing against your staging environment to avoid making any damaging posts or deletions to your live community. If in doubt, try out only the GET endpoints.

Some of you have asked about the sunset period for API V1. No dates have been set but the sunset period will be long and ample warning will be provided.

For more information, please consult this help article and please share any feedback with your CSM or customer support.
